This position will be located in Azusa, CA in the Space Systems, Strategic Force Programs business unit.Essential Functions:This position is for a Department Manager supporting the NGC SFP Hardware Engineering department in Azusa, CA. The Mechanical Engineering Department Manager is responsible for both functional management and technical supervision of program assignments for a Mechanical Engineering group in Azusa, CA. The successful candidate will be a skilled CAD designer as well as a manager.This is a hybrid role balancing direct program technical demands and indirect people management (10-16 highly capable technical professionals). Functional responsibilities include: ensuring the people, processes, and tools are in place to meet cost, schedule, and technical performance requirements for the various programs to which the personnel are assigned. The manager is responsible for hiring staff, making assignment decisions, training, performance evaluation, compensation decisions, career development, and corrective or disciplinary actions when required. In the functional role, the department manager reports directly to the Director of Hardware Engineering. The person will also support programs on matrix assignments.Technical responsibilities include: technical oversight of the mechanical engineering of space-qualified hardware and systems. Areas of aptitude include: subsystem integration, durability and damage tolerance, methods of model validation, structural load paths and design margins, and space instrument verification and validation. The manager will be accountable to program office and IPT leadership for execution of schedule, budget, and technical performance of mechanical engineering tasks performed by their direct reports. In the individual contributor part of the hybrid role, the person shall be directly accountable to the program office and IPT leadership for their design and other activities. The manager will be responsible for oversight of technical reviews, contributing to and approving proposal basis-of-estimates, analysis and test reports, special projects, trade studies, MRB, and customer reviews.The manager also has performance appraisal, employee development, employee well-being, and organizational advancement responsibility. As first line management for many employees, the manager will enhance and encourage employee development with career advice and training as well as notifying employees when suitable career advancement positions are available. The ideal candidate should have strong communication and presentation skills. This will include the ability to connect to direct reports, suppliers, and internal and external customers on multiple levels.Basic Qualifications:Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace or Aeronautical Engineering, Material Science, Physics, or related STEM field5+ years of combined experience primarily in mechanical engineering design with involvement in structural analysis and testing.Extensive experience with designing hardware using CAD tools3 or more years of experience in leading project and/or tiger teamsAble to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret clearance or higher (U.S. Citizenship Required)Strong communication and MS Office skillsAble to evaluate engineering products for conformity to industry, customer or company standards, procedures, and specifications.Preferred Qualifications:Master's degree or above in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or Aeronautical Engineering from an accredited university with an emphasis in space flight equipment and/or space vehicle structures.Experience designing space borne equipment using CREOWorking knowledge of FEA or thermal applications (Nastran, Patran, Thermal Desktop)10+ years of work experience in the area of spacecraft payload equipment, with familiarity to meet structural dynamics analysis for space launch environmentsFamiliarity with design & analysis processes for DOD and/or NASA space programsPrior management/leadership position is highly desired.Proven track record in developing solutions to difficult problems that are rigorous, innovative, affordable, and consistent with program objectives.Demonstrated leadership experience in a product development environmentCurrent, active clearance: Secret, Top Secret, SCI/SSBISalary Range: 127800 - 191600Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay.
